A Tale of Two Speakeasies

Updated: Nov 28, 2022

The rise of speakeasies are upon us, but each has it’s own kind of vibe. So depending on how you’re feeling this WKND – here are a couple we’ve enjoyed that are quite literally the opposite of one another – so…choose your journey wisely.

The Back Room is one of the last of 2 speakeasies in NYC that operated during Prohibition that is still in existence today – so like the OG of all OGs. The kind of place you go to in order to wow your date. It’s the full experience, having to make your way down the dark alley until you finally reach a set of steps that transport you back into the 1920s using the same entrance. Formally known as the “Back of Ratners”, everyone from movie stars to gangsters frequented this spot, you know…for “business meetings”. Pro tip: there’s a Mexican Bar & Restaurant right on top of the Back Room called “La Contenta” – start there if you’re hungry & end the night downstairs.

The Woo Woo sits right underneath the Mean Fiddler in Midtown & is password protected. Head over to their site to look for the password or make a reservation @thewoowoonyc.com. The kind of place you want to take your date if you’re feeling frisky or flirty. Serving up 80’s vibes in a risqué sex shop setting. The Woo Woo is an ode to Times Square in the 80’s when it was lined with sex shops & curiosity instead of Disney stores. Travel down a neon graffiti staircase into place where sexual shaming is a thing of the past. Enjoy fun 80’s inspired cocktails like the “Purple Rain” or “Eye of the Tiger” & don’t forget to take some pictures in their photobooth on your way out!
